When the founders of Dutch Growers, Arie & Adrie vanDuyvendyk, came to Canada from the Netherlands, not only did they need to learn a new vocabulary of words, but a new vocabulary of plants.
Growing conditions on the Prairies are severe. Winters are a bone chilling -40... Celsius or Fahrenheit... Summers can include heat waves in the mid 30's (C). We can have frost in June and also in August. How do you choose a plant that will not only survive, but thrive?
The good news is that over the last 50 years, many new ornamental plants have been developed for our growing conditions. Every year, new plants are tested and the plant vocabulary for the prairie gardener increases.
